Budget

Est. $2,500-$9,000

Difficulty

insane

Highlights

  • A 253.5-meter obstacle course featuring sand traps, fences, and a waist-deep water splash zone.

  • The event attracts competitors from over 20 countries.
  • Costumes are common and encouraged.
  • Equal parts competitive sprint and Finnish absurdist humor.

Planning Steps

  1. Register through eukonkanto.fi. Entries close the Wednesday before race day. Entry costs 55 EUR per pair.
  2. Fly to Helsinki (HEL) or Kuopio (KUO). From Kuopio, Sonkajarvi is approx 80 km north.
  3. Find your carrying partner — the carried person must weigh at least 49 kg.
  4. Practice the Estonian carry technique (person carried upside-down with legs around shoulders).
  5. Arrive the day before for the pre-event festival with live music and food stalls.
Pro tip

The water obstacle is the great equalizer. Lower center-of-gravity pairs surge ahead here.
