Planning Steps

  1. Register through nxtri.com when entries open (usually January). Slots fill in minutes.
  2. Qualify by completing an Ironman-distance triathlon under the cutoff time.
  3. Fly to Bergen (BGO), then bus/ferry to Eidfjord in Hardangerfjord.
  4. Begin with a pre-dawn ferry crossing and a jump into the 15C fjord at 3:50 AM.
  5. Train for 226 km total: 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km run finishing atop Gaustatoppen at 1,850 m.
Pro tip

Train specifically for power hiking steep grades. The Gaustatoppen ascent is too steep to run for most athletes.
